About the XRHL
XRHL- Xanadu Roller Hockey League has come a long
way. Jim Trussell, Xanadu Skate Manager, has played
professional Roller Hockey in Europe. He is the driving force
behind creating a competitive, fun, family oriented roller-ball
hockey league. Why Xanadu (Zan-ah-doo)? Xanadu Skate
Center is the name of the Skate Center where all games are
played. Xanadu is located in the North East Corner of
Hollywood Connection which is the building across the street to the
East of the E-Center in West Valley City, UT.

It all started when Jim noticed that many people
were playing street hockey on rollerblades, but there wasn't an
organized program to help them develop their skills. Their first program
was started by Jim and his brother using long tables as rink boards
on a gym floor in the Kearns Rec. Center. This league trained
hundreds of kids for 3 years. in 2002 Jim moved the program
to Xanadu and formed the XRHL (Xanadu Roller Hockey League). From
such humble beginnings grew a very successful roller hockey program
that is now functioning to near capacity.
The Xanadu Roller Rink has brought the program to
new heights. The rink received a new "state of the art"
skating surface and was acquired at great expense. The youth
and Senior programs have grown steadily and are a great value that
ends up being around $5 per game for each person.

The game is co-ed with both males & females on
the same team. Some sign up as a complete team, others register as
a single player and are assigned to a team based on their skill
level. The difference between other roller hockey leagues is that
the XRHL uses a "tennis ball" sized hard plastic ball instead of
the flat puck. The ball doesn't bounce much and ends up feeling
very much like a puck on ice yet not as heavy. Regulation
wooden hockey sticks are used. A few youth use plastic blade street
hockey sticks. The Rink is only about 2/3 size of an ice arena with
a full hockey boards surrounding the oval surface
and a net above the boards keeps the ball in play. There are
no blue or center lines, so there are no off sides or icing.
The feel of the game is a lot like arena football in that it is
high scoring and great action.
The Senior games are three 15
minute periods. The youth leagues are two 20 minute periods.
Each team has 4 players and a goalie on the court and a normal team
has no more than 8 players and a goalie. You must wear roller
blades (quad or inline) a mouth guard and a helmet (hockey, bike or
skate helmet - face guard cage optional). Most players use
hockey gloves and/or shin, knee and elbow pads as well. Such
equipment is highly recommended as the hockey ball can really sting
on unprotected shins or soft flesh. Some prefer the "quad" skates
while some prefer the inline blades. Either is acceptable as
long as they are in good shape and won't damage the skating
surface.

Jim has been
very accommodating to new players. There is some loaner equipment. No matter
what your skill level, beginner to expert and everything in between, the
emphasis is to have everyone have a great experience in a "family" environment.
Unsportsmanlike behavior such as fighting, swearing, taunting, or body checking
is not tolerated.
The focus is
fun, competitive, fast action roller hockey.Because of this policy
the players focus on great games and quality competition.
